At Home Mold Remediation: Bleach or No Bleach?

When you find mold in your home, your first impulse is likely to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible.  It doesn’t look or smell like anything you want to allow in your home any longer, and you definitely don’t want to give it time to spread.  And so, following the traditional wisdom in many homes, you reach for the bottle of bleach…

But wait.  Although for at-home mold remediation, bleach is often listed as a common solution, it is not a cure-all in every situation of mold growth.  Let the experts at Advanced Mold Diagnostics help you figure out when to bleach and when to reach out for help.

When it comes to small cases of mold remediation, bleach can be highly effective on hard, non-porous surfaces.  For example, if you have dark spots of mold appearing in the bathtub, tile floors, or even the kitchen counter, bleach will likely clean up the whole mess.  First, make sure the area is well ventilated.  Then, mix bleach at a ratio of one part bleach to ten parts water.  You can use either a spray bottle or bucket and cloth to clean the mold growth.  If the surface is used for food preparation, or might be touched by kids or pets, you want to rinse it when you’re done; otherwise, you can leave the bleach there to inhibit future growth.

Mold remediation bleach solutions are less effective in a variety of other situations, including:

  • Growth on fabrics and furniture
  • Growth on wood and Drywall
  • An affected area larger than 5 square feet
  • High-risk individuals living in your home

If any of the above are factors in your home mold growth situation, it is important that you call a professional remediation service, such as Advanced Mold Diagnostics.  If it is something that you will still be able to resolve safely on your own, we will offer the expert advice that comes from many years in remediation services.  But, if the problem is too big to be handled safely or effectively at home, we can arrange for an inspection and professional remediation.  Whatever the case, we will work with you to achieve a clean, mold-free home!
